The President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Dr. Yaw Adu Gyamfi, has appealed to government to help develop production capacities of local industries to effectively take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. This, he believes, will help position Ghanaian industries to fully leverage the opportunities of the agreement, otherwise, the country runs the risk of being marginalized.

Speaking at the 8th AGI Ghana Industry & Quality Award in Accra on the theme ‘Positioning local industries for Global competitiveness’, Dr. Adu Gyamfi stated that “may I commend Government for its bold efforts that led to our country hosting the secretariat for the Africa Continental Free Trade Area here in Ghana. However, hosting the AfCFTA secretariat here in Ghana alone does not guarantee the numerous benefits for our local businesses.”

He continued “there is the need to empower local businesses through a well-thought-out tariff liberalization plan in the next ten years while building local production capacity.”

On her part, Chairperson of the Awards Committee, Mrs Nora Bannerman-Abbott, used the occasion to call on all Government agencies established to support the private sector to grow to inject new energy and fresh ideas to support the growth of our industries into giants not only on the African Continent but on Global Markets. According to her, “it is so crucial for us to develop a well-planned and deliberate national strategy in order to reap the numerous fortunes the AfCFTA presents.”
