The Accra Regional Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr. Tsonam Cleanse Akpeloo, together with members of the plastics sector, met with officials of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to discuss preparations for the implementation of the ban on Polystyrene Foam (Styrofoam), scheduled to take effect from 1st January 2027.
Speaking on behalf of industry players, Mr. Akpeloo welcomed the opportunity for dialogue and emphasized the need for a practical and collaborative approach to the transition. He noted that while manufacturers understand the environmental concerns associated with Styrofoam and support efforts to promote sustainable production and consumption, it is equally important to ensure that businesses are given adequate time and support to adapt.
Mr. Akpeloo highlighted concerns relating to existing investments, available stock levels, alternative packaging materials, production costs, and consumer acceptance of substitute products. He stressed that any transition must be guided by data, continuous stakeholder engagement, and clear implementation guidelines to prevent disruptions to businesses and jobs within the sector.
He further called for discussions around incentives, tax considerations, and support mechanisms that would enable manufacturers to invest in environmentally friendly alternatives while remaining competitive. According to him, sustainability goals and industrial growth must go hand in hand.
The EPA assured participants that the transition would be implemented gradually and would involve consultations across the entire value chain, including manufacturers, importers, food vendors, and consumers. The Agency also indicated that additional measures aimed at promoting recycling, producer responsibility, and sustainable packaging solutions are under consideration.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of ongoing collaboration between regulators and industry in developing solutions that protect the environment while supporting business growth, investment, and employment.
